Key Terms Review

Do you still remember what a variable is? What about an expression? Well, here's your chance to review.

A VARIABLE is a letter that represents an unknown number.
For example, x, y, n are usually represented for an unknown number.

An EXPRESSION is any single number(3) or variable(x) or combination of operation(+) involving numbers and a variable.
For example, 2y-7.

The VALUE is a known or calculated amount.
For example, 3 is a known or calculated amount.

A CONSTANT is a number that does not change, but it increases or decreases the value of an expression.
For example, 3x+5. 5 is the constant.

A NUMERICAL COEFFICIENT is a number that multiplies the variable.
For example, 10x4 . The numerical coefficient is 10.

Do you understand now? I sure hope you do.

BEDMAS question on February 10

The V with the line means square root.
We didn't learn much about it. Isfeld did however tell me it was almost like dividing so you add it in with division and multiplication. You would do the square root after brackets and exponents before division because it goes left to right.

The rest is the same thing we usually do:
Brackets
exponents
division and multiplication
addition and subtraction

What is a mixed number?

A mixed number is a number made up of a whole number and a fraction.

What's a Constant?

A Constant is......
A number that does not change and it increases or decreases the value of an expression

Divisibility song

Value

MATHEMATICAL VALUE:

In mathematics, value is the 'output' of a function. Basically that of unary, single-valued, there is one input )and one output.

Numerical Coefficient

NUMERICAL COEFFICIENT:
A numerical coefficient is a factor that multiplies in some term of an expression, it is usually a number, but it
does not involve any variables of the expression
  • Meanings for constant,
  • a number that arises naturally in mathematics, such as Ï€ or e,
  • a value that does not change

Math Definitions Again

Variable: A letter that represents an unknown matter.
eg. x,a,n or f
Expression: Any single number or variable or combination of operation (-,+,x,÷) involving numbers and variables.
eg. 5,n,8t,x+1,2y-7
Value: A known or calculated amount.
Constant: A number that does not change and it increases or decreases the value of an expression.
Numerical coefficient: A number that multiplies the variable.
eg. 2t

What is Numerical Coefficient?

A Numerical Coefficient is a number that multiplies the variable

eg. 2t

What is a Constant?

A Constant is a number that does not change and it increases or decreases the value of an expression

eg. S-2 the constant was how much students were in the beginning, and it decreased because the expression took away two

What is a Value?

A Value is a known or calculated number

eg. 3x3=9

The 9 is the value

An Example on how to Write an Expression

An expression is any single number or variable or combination of operations (-, +, x, ÷) involving numbers and variables

A group of students are talking, 2 friends leave the group. Write an expression for the number of the students in the group after the 2 leave.

S- the students expression: S-2
2- the ones that leave

What is a Variable?

A variable is a letter that represents an unknown number

eg. x, a, n

Mr. Wilson's math answer question

My answer:
It's based on the grading range.
for example, the letter grades would fall into these grade ranges:
A: 100% to 90%
B: 89% to 80%
C: 79% to 70%
D: 69% to 60%
F: 59% and lower.
Therefore, since the student got 11 out of 14 correct, their grade would be 78.5%. Which is a C grade.

Constant, Numeral Coefficient

Constant- a number that does not change and it increases or decreases the value of an expression.

Numerical Coefficient- a number that multiples the variable.

eg. 2+ , 2 is the Numerical and + is the Coefficient.

Variable, Expression, Value

Variable-a letter that represents an unknown number.

eg. x, a, n, b

Expression
- any single number or variable, or combinations of operation (-, +, x, /) involving numbers and variables.

Eg. 5, n, 8+, x+1, 2y-7

Value- a known or calculated amount.

Common Denominator

Common Denominator- a common multiple of the denominators of a set of fractions.

eg. a common denominator for 1/4 and 1/6 is 12 because a common multiple of 4 and 6 is 12.

To make a common denominator we have to find the LCM- Lowest Common Multiples.

eg. 4 and 6
the LCM is 12
4- 4, 8, 12,
6-6, 12

Once we find a common denominator we make eqiuvalent fraction.

Hope you learn something about this.

Multiple

Multiple- the product of any given number and natural number like 1, 2, 3.

eg. some multiples of 3 are 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18.

List the first 5 multiples of 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 12.

8-8, 16, 24, 32, 40
12- 12, 24, 36, 48, 60

Multiples is just skip counting.

BEDMAS
8 + 6 x 2 x 3 - ( 15 - 13 )
what to do first?
Brackets (15-13)=2
Then you write the question again BUT with the answer you got from answering what was in the brackets
8+6x2x3-2
After brackets you look at Exponents, since there is no exponents you go to the next one which is Division and Multiplication. You ask yourself, is there any division or multiplication in this question? The answer is YES! You answer the multiplaction question....2x3=6 then write the question again but with the answer you got for answering the multiplaction question
8+6x6-2
Since there is still a multiplaction question you must multiply it! 6x6=36
Finally Addition and Subtraction. You ask yourself, is there any addition or subtraction question? The anwser is YES! 8+36=44
44-2=42
The final answer is 42!
8+6x2x3-(15-13)
8+6x2x3-2

Expression Word Problem

A group of students are talking. 2 friends leave the group. Write an expression for the number of students in the group after the 2 leave...
Answer: S-2 or G-2
Because, the question says "a group of students" it does not tell us how many students are in the group. Therefore we use a variable since the number is unknown.
And, 2 because the question states that 2 students leave the group.
S = students and G = group

You can use either one.

Adding Mixed Numbers

A mixed number is a number made up of a whole number and a fraction such as..
1 2/3
not 2 3/2

Deal with the whole numbers first

eg. 1 1/3 + 1 1/3

This question already has a common denominator

Deal with whole numbers

1+1=2

Now deal with the fractions

In this case its 1/3 + 1/3

They both have a common denominator

1/3 + 1/3 = 2/3

Combine the whole numbers and fractions

2 + 2/3 = 2 2/3
