How to Solve Algebraic Equations

Isolate the variable:

I got rid of the plus 4 then the multiply by 6.
What you do on one side, you have to do to the other.

You should check your answer, afterwards.

Perpendicular Bisector

Definition: A line that bisects a line segment into 2 equal parts.

Angle Bisectors

Definition: A line that divides an angle into two equal parts.

Since the angle shown above is bisected, what are the measures of the 2 new angles?

Answer:45 because 90÷2=45

Adding Negative and Positive Integers

(-4)+2=(-2)
It's easier if you use integer chips or a number line.  I'll demonstrate using integer chips.

There are two zero pairs there.
*Zero Pairs- Two integers that equal zero. eg 1 and (-1), 2 and (-2,) 3 and (-3).
What's left now is (-2).

Factors and Venn Diagrams

You'll have to know how to sort factors into Venn Diagrams.

For example: Factors of 24 and 16.

First, find the factors of 24. They are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12 and 24.
Then, try finding the factors of 16. They are 1, 2, 4, 8 and 16.
*Try not to mix factors up with multiples.
Now you can sort them in a venn diagram:

Numerical Coefficient

A numerical coefficient is a number that multiplies the variable.

Constant

A constant is a number that does not change and it increases or decreases the value of an expression.

Value

A value is a known or calculated amount.

Expression

An expression is any single number or variable, or combination of operations (-,x,+,÷) involving numbers and variables.

Examples: 5xA, T+1, 6÷D

Textbook Question #4 on page 222

Question:
Copy and complete the table. If the number in the left column is divisible by the number in the top row, put a . If it is not divisible, put an X.

Solution:
Lets start with 630. 630 is divisible by 2, 5 and 10 because 630 ends in 0. It's divisible by 3 and 9 because the sum of the number is 9. 9 is divisible by 3 and 9. It's divisible by 6 because it's divisible by both 2 and 3.

The next number is 5184.  It is divisible by 2 because it ends in 4, an even number. It is divisible by 3 and 9 because the sum of the number is 18. 18 is divisible by both 9 and 3. It is divisible by 4 because if you divide 5184 by 2 twice, you get a number with no remainder. It's divisible by 8 because if you divide 5184 by 2 thrice, you get a number with no remainder.

This number, 2035 is only divisible by 5 because 2035 ends in 5.

Finally, 810 is divisible by 2, 5 and 10 because 810 ends in 0. It's divisible by 9 and 3 because the sum of the number is 9, which can be divided evenly by 9 and 3. It is divisible by 6 because 810 is divisible by both 2 and 3.

Textbook Question #6

This question can be found on page 214 of your textbook.

6. Write each addition statement shown by the fraction strips. Estimate the answer, then add.*

To answer these question correctly you have to add these fractions properly.  You add the numerators together. Do not add the denominators together.

eg. Right:one half + one half = two halves or one whole.
Wrong:one half + one half ≠ two fourths.

a)

b)

c)

*I didn't show my estimating because I felt that you don't really need to. Also, I didn't understand what the textbook meant by estimating the answer.

Number of the Day: #23

You have to convert a proper fraction to a decimal. (The proper fraction will be the answer you got for number 21.)

Lets say that the proper fraction is one half.

A decimal is always over 1.  You have to convert the denominator to 1. In this case, you divide 2 by 2 to make 1. Whatever you do to the bottom you have to do to the top. 1÷2=0.5

Page 146 #4

Use a ratio table to find the answer.

a) Find 10% of 25

The answer should have been 2.5.

b) Find 25% of 84.

The answer should have been 21.

c) Find 50% of 98.

The answer should have been 49.

d) Find 75% of 124.

The answer should have been 93.

Remember that when using a ratio table, what you do on one side you have to do to the other.

Order of Operations

Here is a step by step guide on how to solve a BEDMAS question.
The example will be:
4x3+12÷2=18
First, you check for brackets. There are none. Then you check for exponents. There are none. Now, check for multiplication and division. There are some. You do multiplication first because it shows up first when you go left to right.

Now you have this:
12+12÷2=18

Now you do division because there are no brackets, exponents or multiplication.

It should look like this:
12+6=18

There are no brackets, exponents, multiplication or division. All there's left to do is either add or subtract.  There's no subtraction sign, but there is an addition sign so you add.

Your answer should be 18.
18=18

 Here's how it should look:
