The three steps of solving a one step operation.

1. Isolate the variable
2. Use opposite operations (+, -, /, x)
3.simplify

If you aren't sure what those mean, then here's an example

e.g. a + 1 = 3
1/2. Isolate the variable by using the opposite operations. a + 1 - 1 = 3
3. Simplify. a = 2

Now to check your answer.
a + 1 = 3
Take away the variable and put in the number of the variable.
2 + 1 = 3
Simplify. 3 = 3.
