An expression word problem

A group of students are talking, 2 friends leave the group. Write an expression for the numbers of students in the group after the 2 leave.

You don't know how much are in the group so we use variables which represent an unknown number.

s= students

2= how much students left the group

VARIABLE- a letter that represents an unknown number

Rules for 1: all whole numbers are divisible by one
Rules for 2: all whole even numbers are divisible by 2, ends in 0,2,4,6,8
rules for 3: the sum of the digit of the whole number is divisible by 3
rules for 4: all whole numbers that are divisible by 2 twice
rules for 5: all whole numbers that ends in 0 or 5
Rules for 6: if the whole number is divisible by 2 and 3 is divisible by 6
rules for 8: all whole numbers that are divisible by 2 3x
rules for 9: the sum of the digit of the whole number is divisible by 9
rules for 10: all whole numbers that ends in 0

Adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators

eg.

1/4 + 1/6 or 3/5 -1/2

You must find a common denominator to make the bottom number the same.

Common Denominator- a common multiple of the denominators of the set of fractions.

eg.

a common denominator for 1/4 and 1/6 is 12 because a common multiple of 4 and 6 is 12.

Multiple- the product of any given number and natural number like 1,2,3.....

Eg.

some multiples of 3: 3,6,9,12,15,18

You must find the 1st 5 multiples of each number

To make a common denominator you must find L.C.M- lowest common multiple

4 and 6

6- 6,12,18,24,304- 4,8,12,16,20

the L.C.M is 12

Once you find a common denominator, you make an equivalent fraction

3/12 + 2/12= 5/12

What is a Numerator

A numerator is the top number of a fraction and tells us how many parts of the whole we have or are dealing with.

A denominator is the bottom number of a fraction and tells us how many parts of the whole is divided into.

Divisibility Rules For One

All whole numbers are divisible by one.

Eg. 3 divided by 1 = 3

111 divided by 1 = 111

Order of Operations

How to the BEDMAS question.

1. Check if there is are any BRACKETS. There are no brackets.

2. Check if there are any EXPONENTS. There are no exponents.

3. Check if there are any MULTIPLICATION/ DIVISION. Yes, there are multiplication and division. Multiplication goes first because the question goes from left to right and is the order that we go in.

4. Check if there are any ADDITION/ SUBTRACTION. Yes, there are addition and subtraction. Add the numbers that you made with the multiplication and division numbers and should get the answer 18.
